Hellebores are blooming!

Genus: Helleborus

Hellebores are a popular garden ornamental – flowering in the late winter and early spring.   They are known for being hardy, adaptable plants and are sometimes referred to as ‘Christmas Rose’ or ‘Lenten Rose’ due to the time of year they bloom.  (although…  the hellebore actually has no relation to the rose.)

Fun Facts: Many species of hellebores are poisonous.  The flower makes an appearance in Greek mythology… supposedly medicine made from hellebore was used to save the daughters of the king of Argos from a madness induced by Dionysus.
